Spiders in Tucson, AZ — Black Widows & More
Tucson is home to several spider species, including two that are medically significant. While most spiders are harmless and actually help control other pests, a few deserve your attention.
Dangerous Spiders in Tucson
- Black Widow: Shiny black with a red hourglass marking on the underside. Found in garages, sheds, block walls, and dark corners. Their bite is venomous and requires medical attention.
- Brown Recluse: Light brown with a violin-shaped marking. Hides in closets, storage boxes, and undisturbed areas. Bites can cause serious tissue damage.
Common Non-Dangerous Spiders
- Wolf Spider: Large, fast, and intimidating but not dangerous. They hunt at night and don’t spin webs.
- Arizona Blonde Tarantula: Large and fuzzy. Docile and not aggressive. Mostly found outdoors.
- House Spider: Small, builds webs in corners and window frames. Harmless.
Prevention Tips
- Remove clutter from garages, sheds, and closets
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and clothing stored in dark areas
- Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows
- Remove webs regularly—discourages rebuilding
- Keep outdoor lighting away from the house (lights attract insects, which attract spiders)
