Arizona Bark Scorpions in Tucson

The Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) is the most venomous scorpion in the United States and one of the most common pests in Tucson homes. They’re small (2-3 inches), light brown to tan, and can climb walls, ceilings, and even get into your shoes.

Why They’re Dangerous

Bark scorpion stings are painful and can cause numbness, tingling, and in rare cases (especially in children and elderly), serious medical reactions. They’re most active at night and during the warm months—which in Tucson means most of the year.

Where They Hide

Bark scorpions love moisture and darkness. You’ll find them under rocks, in block walls, inside shoes, behind picture frames, in closets, and in garages. They can squeeze through gaps as small as a credit card.
